A talk by Dr Mohammad Seddon,
Lecturer in Islamic Studies, University of Chester
Dr Seddon tells the varied story of Muslim life in this country, from the earliest evidence in England in the eighth century up to the mass immigration to Manchester from south east Asia in the twentieth century. The lecture introduces the lascar sailors, Arab trading houses, Syrian and Moroccan communities of nineteenth century Manchester and also takes in the stories of Robert Rachid Stanley, Mayor of Stalybridge, and the history of the Yemeni community in Eccles from the 1940s onwards.
